FRENCH VILLA A House in Provence This is a country home in the idyllic setting of the south of France's beautiful Provence region. A large private estate with a 500-year old converted 'mas' or farmhouse that is surrounded by fruit trees, dotted with fountains and natural springs, just a short drive from St. Remy and Avignon. The design goal was to combine luxury and comfort of a convivial yet prestigious villa. The buildings that comprise this villa consists of the original three story farmhouse or "mas" and an adjoining barn that has been used for bottling and storing wine, as well as other various smaller farm buildings. There was an existing beautiful row of London plane trees that lead up to the property but otherwise the surrounding landscaping was nonexistent. The gardens were divided up into different areas, the pool, the rose garden, the pasture, the olive grove and they were planted using native species such as lavender, olives, oleander, Jasmin and rosemary. The large gardens allows for spaces which are more formal and others more wild and free. Many of the furnishings, lighting fixtures and decoration were purchased at the nearby world-famous antique markets of Isle Sur La Sorgue. A mix of modern comforts, old-world charm and oversize couches makes the salon a perfect place to relax in all seasons. Stone floors are found throughout the ground floor and together with the heavy wooden shutters help maintain the natural cooling and ventilation systems that have been in use in this part of the world for a very long time. The original floors were maintained wherever possible and once restored simply varnished. The original beam construction brings wonderful warmth and character to the bedrooms of the old house.
