BREW'D Coffee Shop, Washington, D.C. Brew'd is a neighborhood coffee shop selling custom espresso coffees drinks and homemade sweets, snacks and sandwiches. The owners wanted to differentiate the space from typical cafes in the area. They wanted a business-type clientele (the area serves as offices and apartments of a young professional demographic.) The design direction was Scandinavian cool, a pale minimal color palette sets the tone overall. While bold punches of color highlights branding moments. Birch was used as a veneer for the custom millwork, while the logo's navy and burnt yellow were used as pops of color ( a custom colored espresso Marazocco machine completed the look). White lighting, counter-tops and walls keep the space clean and bright. The cafe is accessed by two entrances, the primary entrance has two steps down into the space. Given this view the customer experiences upon entering the cafe, the design called for something dramatic. In addition the 600 SF space is quite small and with the stairs there was a risk of congestion at the entrance. An oval racetrack- shaped barrista bar was proposed. The oval cafe bar allows two people to work together inside serving customers and making coffee, while customers form a line around the oval, selecting pastries, placing their order, and collecting their drinks while following the contour of the custom designed millwork. Built-in seating next to the large plate glass windows offers a casual place to eat and drink. The high counter-top with stools gives an opportunity to use a laptop, although the owners wanted to discourage customers from spending long hours using the space as a defacto office.
